Abstract
Since Ukraine declared its independence in 1991, the Christian churches present in the country have faced a continuous challenge of self-understanding. The collapse of the Soviet Union brought not only geopolitical but also profound social transformation that affected every actor in religious life: the churches had to rethink their social role, their relationship to the society, and their relations with one another and with the state. This dissertation examines how, within this changing environment, the theological and social self-understanding of Ukraine's Christian churches primarily the Orthodox Church under the Moscow Patriarchate, the Greek Catholic Church, and the vangelical-Baptist communities were reshaped through the processes of inculturation and ecumenical cooperation. While the title refers to the entire period after 1991, the empirical focus of the study falls on the 2013–2014 Revolution of Dignity (Maidan) and the theological processing that followed it, commonly referred to as "Maidan theology."
